Elnaz Moghimi PhD

Scientist.

I focus on improving mental health care.

As a research scientist at Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, I am responsible for developing a program focused on improving patient care. Acknowledging the social, environmental, and personal aspects of mental health allows me to adopt an intersectional approach that advocates for equitable care. Trained as a qualitative scientist, I work with an amazing team of researchers, support staff, and partners to develop studies and initiatives that can result in large-scale and actionable changes to our mental health care system. My current research pursuits include youth mental health, patient-oriented research in forensic contexts, intimate partner violence, and digital therapeutics in healthcare settings.

Prior to my current role, my PhD dissertation was conducted at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, where I worked closely with women diagnosed with binge eating disorder. Exploring their lived experiences with pharmaco- and psychological therapies shed light on the need for more accessible and optimized mental health care.

During my postdoctoral fellowship, I worked closely with the Canadian startup company, OPTT, to assess the efficacy of online psychotherapy and mental health programs in different populations. As part of the Queen’s University Online Psychotherapy Lab, I was trained in cognitive behavioural therapy and digital mental health therapies. Working with different populations (including post-secondary students and correctional workers), enabled me to appreciate the importance of patient-centred and co-creative approaches to improving care.

Educator.

I am passionate about knowledge translation, knowledge mobilization, and student/trainee mentorship.

As an adjunct assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry at Queen's University, I am deeply committed to student and trainee mentorship. With a focus on research skills and career development, I derive great satisfaction from guiding trainees and students.

My teaching philosophy is strongly rooted in encouraging critical thinking and building confidence. I am especially invested in working with individuals from equity-seeking and equity-deserving communities.

Mentorship has the power to shape lives and careers. I work diligently to foster a supportive and nurturing environment, instilling in students and trainees a passion for learning, critical thinking, and personal growth.

Health Coach.

It’s all about collaboration.

Outside of academia, I work with a select number of clients as a health coach. I have more than a decade of experience working in the health food, nutraceutical, medical, and fitness space as a nutrition educator, nutritionist, and coach. Through these experiences, I have collaborated with a variety of different individuals from all walks of life and health statuses.

Drawing on my research and education, I work with individuals to build healthy food, nutrition, and exercise habits and provide them with the necessary support and guidance to work toward their health and fitness goals.

With a background in psychology and teaching, I appreciate connecting with others in an empathetic, non-judgmental, and engaging manner.

My goal is to use practical skills and strategies for individuals to appreciate the impact of nutrition and food choices on their bodies, the role of mental health on their eating and health behaviours, and the importance of positive human connections when making significant health changes.
